Thinking of Upgrading to Blu-Ray - Read This First
Aug 23, 2010

Blu-ray is slowly becoming the standard for watching movies at home and no wonder, the reason for its increasing popularity is because of its excellent sound and picture and the fact that it has so much more to offer. Watching a movie on Blu-ray is an excellent experience. A lot of people still haven't converted completely to Blu-ray because of the heavy price tag and because a lot of people still think that Blu-ray is not much different than regular DVD's but on the contrary Blu-ray is way better than regular DVD.

First of all Blu-ray discs offer much more disk space. A regular DVD can only store 4.7GB worth of data whereas a Blu-ray disc can hold up to 27GB on a single layer disc. This means better sound and video quality. The higher capacity means that movies can be stored with higher bitrates and higher framerates. This equals better quality and you get to watch your movie in true HD. Also 27 GB space equals 3hours of HD TV or 13 hours of standard definition TV.

Another advantage of Blu-ray discs is that they are physically more durable. They are much more resistant to scratches than regular DVD's making them ideal for data storage and console gaming discs.

Switching to Blu-ray does not mean that you will have to throw away all of your old DVD collection. That's because Blu-ray disc players are backward compatible i.e. they can run also run standard DVD discs. Some players are also able to "improve" the quality of your regular DVD movies, which means that the Blu-ray player improves the quality of the image to better suite your HD TV.

Chances are that if you upgrade to Blu-ray you may never want to go back to regular DVD again.
